8 Things to do After Buying Your First Home

So you just bought a house, congratulations! Overcoming today's job market is an impressive accomplishment. Soon after the celebration, you may be overwhelmed when you realize there are several things to do before you officially move in.  Below is a checklist for a new home that outlines 10 important tasks you need to complete immediately after buying a house.

1. Secure Your Home

Securing your home is a crucial step when you buy a house. After receiving the keys, you should immediately change any locks, garage codes, and access points. This ensures you have access to the house, not the previous owner. Obtain a copy of the manuals or the locks and alarm systems.

2. Connect Utilities

Connect the water, gas, and electricity for a more friendly move-in process. This will ensure your house is operational when you move in. Other utilities to consider are internet and gas collection.

3. Schedule a Deep Clean

Before you move in you need to clean the house. You can clean the house yourself or schedule a professional deep cleaning, you can save money by telling them to focus on the most used rooms instead of the entire house. This ensures you move into a clean home.

4. Complete Paperwork

Buying a new home comes with paperwork. Update your address with the USPS, DMV, IRS, state tax agencies, banks, and credit card providers. Arrange to have mail from your old address forwarded to your new address. Make copies of your closing documents and store them somewhere safe. It also wouldn’t hurt to make a checklist of all the home projects to complete.

5. Check Your Insurance

Ensure your insurance company is aware of your address change. Your previous coverage may not work for the new location's size, location, construction material, and potential risks.  Reviewing your insurance ensures that you are protected when you move in.

6. Purchase or Review Your Warranty

Purchasing a home warranty offers financial protection for any sudden or unexpected problems with your home. These problems include breakdowns in home systems and appliances. Buying a warranty is optional but it should be considered. Sometimes, you receive a warranty purchased by the seller. In this case, review the warranty to see what is covered and how to file a claim.

7. Check Alarms

Ensure all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working correctly. You may need to replace the batteries or the system if necessary. Check the batteries in your detectors every six months.

8. Meet the Neighbors

It is helpful to be on good terms with the neighbors. They can give you pointers for everything from handymen to nearby restaurants. It also helps to have someone watch your home while you are away. Talk to your new neighbors when you feel comfortable.

9. Check HVAC Filters

Check the air filter of your central air or heating system as soon as possible to determine if it needs to be replaced. A dirty filter can cause poor air quality and damage your HVAC system. It is advised to play it safe and replace them. Remember to replace the filter every three months.

10. Bring in Furniture/Unpack

Before moving, take inventory of what you have and label boxes. When you get to your new home, unbox your belongings carefully. You can also start bringing in and arranging furniture. Put the finishing touches on your home by adding art and decorations.
